T cells are primarily responsible for mediating cellular immunity. They originate in the bone marrow and undergo maturation in the thymus. Within the thymus, T cells undergo proliferation and differentiation into helper, regulatory, cytotoxic T cells, or memory T cells. Subsequently, they are dispatched to peripheral tissues or circulate within the blood or lymphatic system. Upon stimulation by specific antigens, helper T cells secrete cytokines that facilitate B cell differentiation. Regulatory T cells function to modulate immune responses while cytotoxic T cells, activated by diverse cytokines, bind to and eliminate infected as well as cancerous target cells.
